"Sitting on a shelf as I walk into my living room is a photograph. It's my everlasting view into Chiapas. Two little girls standing side by side, their eyes gazing into the distance, strands of sun-kissed hair lightly stroking their dresses, vibrant displays of color clinging to their thin, dark skin. Too shy to talk to me, I never knew their names but I remember them and the faces of all the children I met on my two-week trip to Chiapas."

Cynthia P. Marentes resides in the border region of El Paso, Texas and Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico. She is also a life long advocate of farmworker rights and fair labor wages.

"Part of what's happened as a result of western science is a focus on materialism and mechanism to the exclusion of spirit; and the development of a capitalist system which also plays into the materialist, consumerist culture. Together these alienate us from our own spiritual nature and from the reality of the spiritual interconnections of life. Breaking out of that alienation to discover life's inherent inter-connection completely changes our concept of ourselves and allows us to find sources of energy and creativity that are otherwise blocked."

David Korten is the founder of People-Centered Development Forum and cofounder and the board chair of the Positive Futures Network, publishers of Yes! A Journal of Positive Futures. David is the author of When Corporations Rule the World, and The Post Corporate World.

Global Uprising Book

"Whatever you do in your
life you have to make a decision whether you want
to be the shield or the sword.
In the case of US foreign
policy, we provide weapons
to countries like Indonesia
that oppresses their own
people -that's the sword.
The shield, I see,
as a tape recorder, a video
camera, a microphone.
To reflect what is happening
is a revolutionary act. "
